A big thank you to Dr. Wendy Alpaugh and Irene Morey who made 3 visits to the school to complete dental screenings and fluoride varnish for K-5 students.  Thanks also to Walter Reed from Memorial Ambulance who conducted a CPR/First Aid class for staff and coaches, and gave a CPR class for Seth LaPlant’s Anatomy students at the High School, this month.  All 8 students who participated appeared to enjoy themselves (see their photo’s on the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Facebook page) and are now CPR certified!!!  We look forward to hosting Walter in February for another staff CPR class and plan additional student classes in the spring.

Did you know February is National Children’s Dental Health Month?  Nationwide, health care professionals will be promoting oral health.  Developing good habits and regular dental care help children get started on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

February 7 is SUGAR-OUT DAY.  The school menu will not include sugary foods that day.  We ask also that you do not send sugary snacks or lunches with your child and invite families to join us by giving up sugary foods, too.  Snacks such as candy, potato chips and soda can be replaced with fresh and canned fruits in light syrup, vegetables, popcorn, cheese and yogurt.

Our local dentists are pleased to offer their services to students during Dental Health Month.  Dr. Brian VanEmmerick will be at DISES on Monday, February 10th.  He will be talking with students in Kindergarten through grade 5.  There will be fun activities related to tooth care ranging from movies to games.  Be sure and ask your student what they learned from Dr. Brian.

The Dental Offices at Island Family Medicine will be holding a FREE Dental Care Clinic on Friday, February 21.  Services such as sealants, fillings, cleanings, fluoride and X-rays will be provided at no cost - did I mention, it’s FREE???  Appointments are required and preference will be given to children, however, adults may be seen if time allows.  Please call, 367-2631, by Friday, February 14th to schedule your appointment.
