The Deer Isle - Stonington Schools are a part of one of Maine's most unique communities and reflect a proud and diverse heritage derived from the richness of what Downeast is all about. From the moment you cross the bridge to the island you enter a community that represents the core of Maine's value to our nation. The island's unmatched beauty and the proud sea-harvesting character of the island's working economy reflect a sense of tradition and commitment that strengthen our schools. The island's history is well maintained in the day-to-day life of today's residents.

The natural beauty and easy way of life in Deer Isle and Stonington has also attracted a wide range of artisans, performers, and craftsman. The island is home to the internationally renown Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Together they present our schools and visitors with the opportunity to see and share with some of our nation's most accomplished and aspiring artists. Writers, photographers and musicians add to the creative mix and often share their talents at public events. Be sure to check out the diverse theater performances at the historic Stonington Opera House.

The island boasts many stunning natural attractions; miles of coastline, inviting waters, and chains of uninhabited islands dot the seascape surrounding the island (see map). In one of the East Coast's few communities where fishing boats still outnumber sailboats, travelers get a real taste of the special flavor of Downeast and Northeastern New England. The harbor and offshore islands near Stonington evoke ghostly echoes of the hammers and saws used to carve massive granite slabs from the bedrock to build the mighty edifices of commerce and government in eastern cities.

The lure of historic Bed & Breakfast accommodations and fresh from the sea dining make for memorable stays. Visitors can stop by the docks in Stonington and watch Maine's world famous lobsters being off-loaded from the fleet of fishing boats... and follow the catch to local restaurants for a meal that won't soon be forgotten. Information about places to stay and eat can be found at the Chamber of Commerce web site.

The area presents a wide range of outdoor activities for all to enjoy. A trip to the island offers outstanding boating, kayaking, and hiking opportunities. The Island Heritage Trust maintains a network of walking and hiking trails that provide access around the island's 24,000 acres and 112 miles of coastline. Several excursion companies offer cruises around the islands surrounding Deer Isle as well as trips to Vinalhaven, North Haven and Isle au Haut.

Our schools are proud to serve and reflect the character of the Deer Isle - Stonington community. Together we seek to offer residents and visitors the very best of Downeast Maine.
