SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES
March 17, 2005

1. Call to Order/Quorum
Chair Kumiega opened the meeting and declared a quorum at 6:02 p.m.
2. Moment of Silence
A moment of silence was observed.
3. Citizen’s Comments
There were no citizen comments
4. Approval of the Agenda
Motion by Greenlaw, second by Eaton, to approve the agenda with the addition
of an executive session on a student matter and deletion of executive session
items 8 and 9 on administrator evaluations and contract negotiations. Vote:
5 Yes; 0 No.
5. Executive Session on a Personnel Matter
Motion by Greenlaw, second by Eaton, to enter executive session at 6:08 p.m.
on a personnel matter pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A. § 405(6)(A)(F). Vote: 5 Yes;
0 No.
Eaton, Kumiega, Cormier, Greenlaw, Adams, Wendell, Berkowitz, B. White, S. White,
and Webster participated in the executive session. The school committee returned
to regular session at 7:14 p.m.
6. ACTION ITEMS
A. Dismissal of an Employee
Motion by Greenlaw, second by Adams, to approve the superintendent’s recommendation to dismiss Benton White III from employment with the Deer Isle-Stonington CSD. Vote: 5 Yes; 0 No.
Adams departed for rehearsal of “Anything Goes”.
7. Executive Session on a Student Matter
Motion by Greenlaw, second by Eaton, to enter executive session at 7:16 p.m.
on a student matter pursuant to 20 U.S.C. §1232g 34 C.F.R. Part 99 (FERPA),
20 U.S.C. § 1412 et seq.34 C.F.R. Part 300 (IDEA), 20-A M.R.S.A.
§ 6205, 20-A M.R.S.A. § 7202. Vote: 4 Yes; 0 No. Eaton,
Kumiega, Cormier, Greenlaw, Adams, Wendell, Berkowitz, B. Humphrey, R. Humphrey,
and Webster participated in the executive session. The school committee returned
to regular session at 7:14 p.m. The school committee returned to regular session
at 8:15 p.m.
6. ACTION ITEMS
B. School Retreat
Most Saturday dates in April conflict with someone’s schedule. April 30 appears to be the common date that most board members and administrators will be available for the annual school committee retreat. Motion by Eaton, second by Greenlaw, to table action on the date for the annual school committee retreat. Vote: 4 Yes; 0 No.
C. Rescission of a Student Expulsion
Motion by Greenlaw, second by Eaton, to rescind the vote on February 7, 2005 expelling an eighth grade student from Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. Vote: 4 Yes; 0 No. .
7. DISCUSSION ITEMS
A. The school committee discussed some options for ending the school year sooner than June 23rd. A Saturday teacher workshop and a student day on May 13th would make the last day of school June 22nd. The possibility of one or two student days on Saturday was also considered. As of March 17th the last day of school is Thursday, June 23rd .
B. Draft # 1 of the 2005-06 School Budget
The school committee postponed discussion of the budget to special meetings on March 23 and 24. Contract negotiations will be discussed in executive session on March 23. Administrator evaluations will be reviewed in executive session on March 24.
